75 years of history celebrated
In 2022, Camp Mokule'ia celebrated it's 75th Anniversary and we couldn't be more proud. To help commemorate this huge mile mark, we have comprised a video to share with all of you. History of Camp Mokule’ia
Camp Mokule`ia was purchased by The Episcopal Church of Hawaii from the McInerny family in 1947. The original 2.5 acre site held buildings erected in the 1920s, of which the two-story studio and maintenance shop are the only remaining structures. This land, leased land to the west, and an additional donated 10 acres mauka comprise the 40 acres of pristine beauty that is Camp Mokule`ia.
For the first 22 years the camp was used on an occasional basis for conferences and summer camp by the Episcopal Church. In 1969, the first year-round director was hired, leading to the development of the summer camping programs and ultimately programs for church and school retreats and conferences, as well as rental programs for adults and families, and Elderhostel programs for seniors.
In 1984, a master plan and a major capital fund campaign were developed for the rebuilding of Camp Mokule`ia, resulting in the construction of the dining hall (1988) and the lodge (1989), extensive repairs on the cabins (1990-91) and the demolition of the older buildings (1990).
Camp Mokule`ia has served many generations of islanders, as well as many from the U.S. mainland and around the world. For so many people it is a place where they experience God’s Abundance, touch God’s Creation and deeply feel God’s presence. We are committed to this always being the case.
